German surnames and meaning

One of the benefits of having German ancestor in your family tree is that their surname may be uncommon in American records; as result, it may be simpler to locate them through online searches if you take advantage of this fact.
Naturally, if their name was common, like Schmidt, Schneider, or Müller, you won’t have as much trouble finding them in records due to misspelling as you would if their name was uncommon.
Instead, the difficulty will come from differentiating your Johann Schmidt from the other participants’.
If, on the other hand, their surname was uncommon and difficult for native English speakers to articulate, the task at hand will be to determine the various ways in which it was spelled in order to locate all of the relevant American records and, with any luck, zero in on the correct spelling in order to trace the paper trail all the way back to Germany.
